California Achieves Lowest Uninsured Rate Ever in 2022 

The share of Californians under age 65 (“nonelderly”) without health insurance reached a historic low in 2022. Based on the most recent California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), the percentage of nonelderly Californians without health insurance dropped to 6.2% in 2022, a statistically significant decline from 2021 (7.4%). The rate of nonelderly people without coverage for a year or more also reached a historic low in 2022. Commonly called the “long-term uninsured,” their rate dropped from 5.7% in 2021 to 4.5% in 2022, another statistically significant decline.

SUTTER HEALTH UNVEILS INNOVATION INCUBATOR 

Sutter Health is joining the ranks of health systems with built-in innovation incubators. 

 The Sacramento-based 24-hospital health system is opening an innovation center “aimed at fostering creative solutions to some of today’s biggest healthcare challenges.” Warner Thomas, Sutter Health’s president and CEO, unveiled the plan at last month’s HLTH conference and said the center should be up and running in San Francisco in early 2024.

Tech giant Amazon now has a health care service operating in California.

Here’s what to know

The tech giant has a new members-only benefit: Health care. In-person options for One Medical are available in only a handful of states, including California. Medicare wants to crack down on payments to insurance brokers

The Biden administration is aiming to close loopholes that it says allow Medicare Advantage insurers to encourage brokers to steer consumers toward certain plans.

As a wave of older Americans face the real possibility of needing long term care, the California legislature is considering funding a modest amount of state-provided long-term care (LTC) coverage. There are many questions about what the legislation might include if it is enacted. The nation’s most populous state has taken preliminary steps to explore the possibility of offering a long-term care benefit but there is still a long way to go. A feasibility report, commissioned by the legislature, was released in its final draft form on December 14, 2022. An actuarial report with additional specifics on cost and financial viability will be released in late 2023.
